What Does the Team Look for During This Appointment?

During your visit, our team carefully evaluates more than just the cleanliness of your smile. We also check for:

  • Signs of gum disease, such as redness, swelling, or bleeding
  • Early signs of tooth decay or enamel erosion
  • Cracked or worn restorations like fillings or crowns
  • Abnormal tissue changes that could point to oral health concerns
  • Plaque and tartar buildup in hard-to-reach areas
  • Bite alignment and tooth wear that may indicate TMJ issues or nighttime grinding
  • Lifestyle or hygiene habits that may affect your oral health, such as dry mouth, brushing technique, etc.

We also assess your need for fluoride treatment to strengthen tooth enamel and provide additional protection against cavities.

Everything we look for during this appointment helps shape your personalized treatment plan and supports good oral hygiene habits for the long term.

How Often Should You Have a Dental Hygiene Exam?

For most patients, a dental hygiene exam every six months is ideal for maintaining a healthy smile and catching issues early. However, the number of appointments may vary based on your oral health. Patients with signs of gum disease or other concerns may require more frequent visits to ensure effective care and maintenance.
