Oral Pathology

  • Dry mouth
  • Oral infections
  • Sores or lesions
  • Early signs of oral cancer

Our goal is to keep you informed, supported, and one step ahead of any concerns.

Common Signs That Should Be Checked

Early detection matters, which is why we encourage patients to pay attention to changes in the mouth. If you notice any of the following, let us know:

  • Sores that don’t heal
  • Persistent dry mouth
  • Red, white, or dark patches on the soft tissue
  • Blisters or ulcers
  • Unusual swelling, lumps, or cysts
  • Chronic bad breath not linked to hygiene
  • Pain or sensitivity in the gums, cheeks or tongue

These symptoms may be harmless—or they may signal something more serious. A timely exam and a biopsy, if needed, can provide clarity and peace of mind.

What to Expect During an Oral Pathology Exam

If we notice something unusual during your routine exam, we’ll take a closer look to determine whether further investigation is needed. In some cases, we may recommend the surgical removal (a biopsy) of a small piece of suspicious tissue under local anesthesia. This sample is then sent to a trusted pathology lab for a microscopic analysis to confirm whether any disease is present.

This careful approach allows us to detect early signs of oral cancer, fungal infections, or other systemic conditions that can affect your oral health–so we can take action early and provide the right care moving forward.

Oral Cancer Screenings–and So Much More

While oral cancer is one of the most serious conditions we look for, our approach to oral pathology covers much more. The American Dental Association recommends regular oral cancer screenings, but we also evaluate abnormalities like cysts, abscesses, and soft tissue infections that may affect your oral health.

If something comes up, our Columbus team will help you understand your results and guide you through treatment options such as antibiotics, antifungal medication, or a referral to a specialist for advanced care. We’re here to make sure you get the care you need–every step of the way.
