Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are available in a variety of materials to suit your specific needs, preferences, and smile goals. Some of the most common types of crowns our dentists may use include:

  • Porcelain Crowns: Ideal for front teeth due to their natural, tooth-like appearance.
  • Zirconia Crowns: Known for their durability and aesthetic appeal–ideal for both front and back teeth.
  • Metal Crowns: Made from durable alloys like gold or palladium, best for back teeth where strength matters most.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns: Combine the strength of metal with the look of porcelain for a balance of durability and appearance.
  • Ceramic Crowns: A metal-free option that looks natural and is perfect for patients with metal allergies.

Our team will help you determine the best choice based on the tooth’s location, your bite, and aesthetic preferences.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown procedure typically takes two visits to one of our Columbus locations:

During the first visit, the tooth is gently reshaped to make room for the crown. Then, we use a digital scanner to capture the precise measurements of your tooth. These scans are sent to the dental lab, where your custom crown will be crafted. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Once the permanent crown is ready, you’ll return to have it placed. We’ll securely boned it using dental cement and check the fit to ensure it aligns comfortably with your bite and gum line–restoring both function and appearance.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns do more than just improve your smile—they also restore strength and protect your natural teeth. Some of the key benefits include:

Restores Strength and Function

Crowns reinforce weakened teeth, allowing you to chew and speak comfortably. They’re especially helpful after a root canal or when a tooth has a large filling.

Improves Appearance

Porcelain and ceramic crowns are custom-matched to your natural teeth, making them a great option for restoring discolored, misshapen, or worn-down teeth.

Protects the Tooth

By covering the entire surface of the tooth, a crown acts as a protective shield–preventing further decay or damage, especially for teeth that have had extensive restorative work.

Long-Lasting Results

Crowns made from durable materials like zirconia or metal ceramic can last 10 years or more with good oral hygiene and regular dental care.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

Caring for your dental crown is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily, being gentle around the gum line where the crown meets your natural tooth to remove plaque and debris. Avoid biting down on hard objects, like ice or hard candies, to prevent cracking or chipping your crown. While the dental cement that holds the crown in place is strong, it’s best to avoid sticky foods that could potentially loosen or dislodge the crown over time. With proper at-home care and regular dental visits, your crown can provide years of durability, comfort, and a confident smile. Our team is here to provide personalized care tailored to your needs.
